Our Faith
The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the "door" to a life of grace and our entry into the Kingdom of God. Through this sacred rite, we are incorporated into the Body of Christ and His Church, receiving the promise of eternal life offered through His death and resurrection.
The Spiritual Journey
✓
Welcomes us into the family of the Church.
✓
Pardons all sin and the punishment due to sin.
✓
Bestows the dignity of being a child of God, rescued from the power of darkness.
The Role of Parents: Your Sacred Ministry
Participation in the Rite
The Request
Publicly asking the Church for the baptism of your child.
The Vows
Joining in the renunciation of sin and the profession of faith.
The Baptism
Holding your child as they are baptized.
The Light
Receiving and holding the lighted baptismal candle.
Requirements for Godparents
Godparents serve as the future guardians of the child's faith. To serve in this role, an individual must:
- Be Appointed: Chosen by the parents or guardians.
- Be a Practicing Catholic: A member of the Church who has received Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.
- Meet Age Standards: Usually at least 16 years of age.
- Live a Life of Faith: Must be in "good standing." If married, the marriage must be recognized by the Church; if single, they must live according to Church standards.
- Not be the Parent: A child's own parents cannot serve as their godparents.
Requirements & Preparation
While godparents provide vital support, the Church recognizes that parents hold the most important responsibility in the spiritual life of the child. Because of your natural relationship with your child, your participation is the heart of the celebration.
Guidelines for Baptism
- Consent: Under normal circumstances, at least one Catholic parent must consent. A non-Catholic parent requesting baptism is asked to give permission for the child’s Catholic instruction.
- Residency: Families should typically present their children for baptism in the parish where they reside or are officially registered.
- Preparation: Because Baptism is a public declaration of faith, preparation is indispensable to ensure you are ready to fulfill the commitment of raising your child in the faith.
- If Marriage applies: The parents of the child or the Godparents must be married by the church.
At St. James the Greater Catholic Church, our Baptismal preparations and celebrations adhere to the General Norms of the Diocese of Raleigh.
